Single Session FFS
What Is Single Session Facial Feminization?
We Accept All Private Insurances
Facial feminization surgery is one of a handful of plastic and gender affirming surgeries that combine a personalized set of procedures into one surgical plan. Surgeons often split this into two or more sessions. However, facial feminization surgery tends to have distinct benefits when performed in one phase whenever possible. Few surgeons performing gender affirming surgeries offer single session facial feminization. Dr. Javad Sajan is one of the few in the world who performs single session facial feminization regularly.
What
Is Facial Feminization Surgery?
The last two decades brought several advancements and evolutions to facial feminization surgery. Body gender affirming surgeries advanced first and became more widely performed, but occasionally, the rare facial feminization would occur. Even as late as 2006, fewer than twenty surgeons in the world performed facial feminization.
Now, facial feminization is much more common. Surgical advancements also allow for more natural looking results and an easier recovery. Additionally, many insurance companies now partially or fully cover facial feminization surgery, making them more accessible to more patients. Allure Esthetic accepts all private insurance.
Single vs. Multiple Sessions
Initially, facial feminization was generally an isolated procedure. For example, a brow bone reduction or a rhinoplasty alone. The patient may undergo multiple of these procedures throughout their lifetime, but it is not one planned treatment. Combined procedures may have occurred when procedures were small.
Today, surgeons and patients are both more comfortable with extended surgical sessions and combined procedures. Thus, most facial feminization surgeries are between one and three surgical sessions. Though few surgeons perform the procedure in one session, among the leading FFS surgeons, one session facial feminization surgery is ideal.
The table below explains why a single session is preferred over multiple sessions in most situations.
Single Session
- Recover once
- Only under general anesthesia for FFS once
- Allows surgeon to align all the features to each other better
- Lower cost
- Only have to bill/work with insurance once
- Shorter recovery overall
- Enjoy your full results sooner
- Safe for the healthy, average patient
Multiple Sessions
- More than one or an extended recovery
- Multiple sessions of general anesthesia
- Allows surgeon to make tweaks if necessary
- Higher cost (due to additional anesthesia and facility fees)
- Final results take longer to come in
- May be preferred in patients with certain health conditions
There are two main reasons Dr. Sajan would recommend multiple sessions. First, if your surgical session would be too many hours, it is best to split the procedure because a very lengthy surgery may increase risks unnecessarily. Secondly, for patients with certain health conditions or who are above 50, a surgical session beyond a few hours may not be ideal. Therefore, Dr. Sajan may recommend splitting sessions for these patients.
However, for the majority of facial feminization patients Dr. Sajan sees, he will recommend performing single session FFS. Furthermore, more male-to-female patients are looking for single session facial feminization because it allows them to see and enjoy their results quicker.
Possible Procedures Performed During Single Session Facial Feminization
As previously mentioned, FFS is a highly customized procedure. This is because everyone’s natural anatomy is different. Some patients will have more feminine facial features than others. For example, a patient may not need a rhinoplasty because their nose is already feminine or will go with the rest of their results.
Thus, every facial feminization surgery looks different from the last. Below are some of the procedures that may be included in your single session facial feminization surgery.
Forehead Reduction
Hairline Lowering
Hair Transplant
Brow Bone Reduction
Brow Lift
Orbital Bone Reduction
Orbital Bone Reduction
Rhinoplasty
Lip Lift
Jaw Contouring
The jawline helps define the profile of the face and has a major influence on how the face is perceived. The ideal feminine jawline is soft and gentle curves. In contrast, an ideal masculine jawline is sharp and contains noticeable angles. In some patients, the jaw may need to be shaved down slightly, or reshaped by cutting the bone with an osteotomy. This is done via a mandibular bony jaw contour procedure. It may also include chin contouring.

What Is Recovery Like & How Long Does It Take?
Performing facial feminization in a single session reduces recovery time. Instead of recovering for several weeks combined after undergoing multiple surgeries. After single session FFS, you can expect to be back at work in two to four weeks. Furthermore, you will likely be back to your normal routine in one to two months or so.
Dr. Sajan will provide you with post-operative instructions based on your customized procedure. You expect to take it easy for at least a few days. While most patients do not report excruciating pain, post-operative pain, swelling, and bruising are expected.
